Schoolhouse Happenings

In August 2006, Schoolhouse Tutors taught a back-to-school writing intensive for middle school students at St. James Episcopal Church on Madison Avenue between 71st and 72nd Streets. Dr. Jennifer Jones led the four-part workshop on the critical skills of writing preparation, organization, development and revision. While completing short writing assignments, students learned how to research efficiently with the Internet, how to use software in the development and editing of a paper, and methods for improving grammar, spelling and typing skills.

Director Jeff Lane has designed an interactive workshop for parents on the changes and logistics of the new SAT.  Jeff will give his workshop, Breaking Down the New SAT: A Workshop for Parents, on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at a PTA function at Hunter College High School for Hunter parents of tenth and eleventh graders.  The workshop, which was also given last year, informs parents about the philosophy and intricacies of the new SAT and its place in college admissions and shows parents how they can best assist their children.

Schoolhouse Tutors teaches customized SAT prep courses at NYC public schools.  Schoolhouse recently taught a six-week, intensive fall course for seniors and a 12-week course for juniors in the spring at El Puente Academy for Peace & Justice in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

In November of 2004, Schoolhouse Tutors participated in a competition for emerging small businesses at Columbia Business School.  Schoolhouse Tutors exhibited its business plan and website and answered questions from students.  Director Jeff Lane and tutor Eli Rous appeared on the cover of the November 11, 2004 issue of The Bottom Line, the Columbia Business School newspaper.
